The story behind this picture goes something like this… I drive my sister to and from school everyday, and one day along the side of the road, appeared the neatest roll of red tube. Day after day we drove past, and I yearned to take some pics of that amazing coil of plastic. Then, one day, I pulled off the side of the road, stopped the engine, and pronounced that I was going to take some pictures. I’m extremely glad that I did.

I really like the way this turned out. The lighting is interesting because it has both warm and cool tones in close proximity, which doesn’t usually occur naturally. The focus is on the center of the chain. The eye starts in the lower right hand corner and follows the line made by the chain all the way to the opposite side. Take a second pass over the picture and one notices the shadow of the chain on the bar. This picture is composed of mostly lines, all leading to one vanishing point, and the organic shape of the individual links contrasts the lines, contributing to what makes this photo so cool.

What meaning does this picture hold for me? Well, it contains a chain, and a chain can be many things. Sometimes it is a connection, usually one that is particularly strong; Sometimes it is a tether, pulling something along; and sometimes it is a binding to hinder movement. I feel that this particular chain is of the connection sort; Its linear nature connects the two sides of the frame, asking the eye to follow it. The colors being bright make the chain non- threatening. If it had been black and white it might have come across as sinister. Also, the soft afternoon light and long shadows also add to a sense of affability and comfort that any sort of “connection” brings.
